Digital and Film Clients

There are so many digital options available now, so many camera’s at least claiming to be “High Definition” and capable of providing a robust signal for a myriad of different workflows, that providing consistent cost guidance is next to impossible.  It all depends on the technical and aesthetic needs of the particular project, and who has ultimately been made responsible for meeting those needs – most likely, the Director of Photography, or the Director in consultation with his/her DP of choice.  Of the many issues involved, I still approach each project with two particular ones at the top of the heap – the post-production/editorial plan (or often, the post-production wishes and hopes), and what are the right lenses for the particular job.  Working backwards from the lenses typically narrows the possible camera systems dramatically.  Final decisions can be made by taking into account the post-production/editorial workflow of choice.  In the past year I’ve shot with Sony f900’s (sometimes to HDCam, sometimes SDI out to some other format or straight to hard drive) with Zeiss Digiprimes, f900’s with ENG-style lightweight zooms, f900’s with lens adaptors which allows for the use of 35mm film lenses (Cooke S4’s and Angieneux 35mm zooms), Panasonic Varicams and SDX900’s with various combinations of the above, HVX200’s with lens adaptors and Zeiss Superspeeds, Phantom High Speed digital cameras with 35mm film lenses, etc, etc.  Every project is a little different, and every cost structure is unique.  I would say it would be hard to get any moderately professional camera package together (meaning at least a HVX200 or Sony EX1 camera head), including matteboxes, lens options, filters, monitors, and so on for less than $400-$600/day.  From that point, how much do you want to spend?  An F23 or D-20 package can easily range around $3,000.00 per day or more – even the Red, with all the added bells and whistles to really maximize its usefulness, can fall into the $1,000-$2,000 per day range.  So ask questions early and often, and don’t finalize your budget until you have the answers.
